Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the Ljungström turbine, particularly its application as a free power turbine in turbo-shaft engines. Participants explore design considerations, mathematical modeling, and resources for further information, including historical context and literature references.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • The original poster (OP) seeks information on the Ljungström turbine's design and size requirements for their turbo-shaft engine project, expressing interest in rough mathematical calculations.
  • Clarification was provided regarding the term "free power turbine," which refers to a power turbine used downstream of a jet engine for generating rotary power.
  • One participant shared a Google search result indicating a large number of resources available on Ljungström turbine designs, including links to historical articles from 1915.
  • Another participant reiterated the search results and provided the same link to historical literature, emphasizing the availability of information.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the interest in the Ljungström turbine and its applications, but the discussion remains unresolved regarding specific design calculations and the best resources for information.

Contextual Notes

The discussion lacks detailed assumptions or specific mathematical frameworks for turbine sizing, and the references to historical articles may not provide direct answers to the OP's queries.

I'm currently building a turbo-shaft engine and I am trying to find a good, yet simple to build free power turbine for extracting the exhaust energy of the jet engine. The Ljungström turbine seems promising as it is compact and easily machined from a 3 axis cnc machine. Does anyone know of the sort of rough math I could do to know how big my turbine must be or where to get this information? Any recommended textbooks?

Thread reopened after the OP clarified the meaning of "free energy"

"free power turbine" is what the guys in the industry call it. Its basically a power turbine located downstream of a jet engine. Usually used for providing rotary power to some device, a gen set, a vehicle a propeller etc.
