SUMMARY

The discussion centers on seeking additional resources to enhance understanding of linear algebra, specifically for a first-year student using "Linear Algebra" 4th ed. by Friedberg, Insel, and Spence. The student expresses difficulty with the proof/concept-based approach and seeks a textbook that presents concepts in a more intuitive manner. Recommendations include Strang's book, noted for its friendly style and ability to develop intuition in algebra. Additionally, it is mentioned that a PDF copy of the 3rd edition, possibly with a solutions manual, can be found online.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of linear algebra concepts
  • Familiarity with proof-based mathematics
  • Access to "Linear Algebra" 4th ed. by Friedberg, Insel, and Spence
  • Ability to conduct online searches for academic resources
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore "Linear Algebra" 3rd ed. by Gilbert Strang for intuitive explanations
  • Research supplementary materials on proof techniques in linear algebra
  • Investigate online platforms for additional linear algebra resources and tutorials
  • Look for study groups or forums focused on linear algebra concepts
USEFUL FOR

First-year students, educators, and anyone seeking to strengthen their understanding of linear algebra through alternative resources and intuitive explanations.

Hi, I'm first year and taking my first algebra course. My class is using "Linear Algebra" 4th ed. By Friedberg, Insel and Spence.

I'm having problems in the course, and I feel I need another textbook. My course is proof/concept based, and I don't have intuition in algebra. Does anyone know any book that explains basic algebra concepts in more physical terms?\

Thanks.

Strang's book is great. It's written in a friendly style and will help you develop your intuition. Good luck!

I should add that the enterprising student should be able to find a PDF copy of the 3rd edition of Strang's book - maybe even with a solutions manual! - by conducting a few Google searches :)
