Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the search for a specific push-along walking "robot" that operates with multiple legs, functioning similarly to wheels. Participants explore the concept of such devices, including their design and mechanisms, and share resources related to similar creations.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant recalls a video of a push-along walking robot with many legs that could be smoothly pushed along, expressing a desire to recreate it.
  • Another participant suggests that adding the term "sculptures" to the search may yield better results for finding similar videos.
  • A later reply identifies the specific robot as a "Strandbeest," confirming the initial participant's memory.
  • Another participant introduces the concept of a "walking table," suggesting it operates on a different mechanism and encourages further exploration of that term.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the existence of the push-along walking robot and the identification of the Strandbeest, but there are multiple views regarding other similar devices, such as the walking table.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the mechanisms of these devices remain unexamined, and the discussion does not resolve the specifics of how the different mechanisms compare.

TL;DR
A long while ago I found a video for a push-along walking "robot" with many legs, which functioned like wheels in that the robot could be pushed along on them quite smoothly - and now I can't find it!
A long while ago I found a video for a push-along walking "robot" with many legs, which functioned like wheels in that the robot could be pushed along on them quite smoothly - and now I can't find it! If I remember rightly it was quite large and made of wood, possibly laser-cut.

Essentially if you pushed it forwards, the legs were powered by the motion (like pushing something along on wheels) and carried the machine along. It was really cool, and I want to try and recreate it myself!

Does anyone know what I'm talking about, or have links to a video or pictures of such a device?

I think I've seen the videos a while back as well. My first Google search for self walking robots didn't work, but then I added the word sculptures and got good hits. Check out this hit list of videos to see if you see the one you remember:

There is also the walking table that uses a different mechanism.
Google 'walking table' for images.
