SUMMARY

This discussion focuses on creating buffers with specific pH values of 4.2, 7.3, and 9.7 using different methods. The user has successfully applied the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation (pH = pKa + log(base/acid)) for the 4.2 buffer but is seeking guidance for the other two buffers. It is emphasized that each buffer must utilize a distinct conjugate pair, as buffers inherently consist of these pairs. The conversation highlights the necessity of understanding various buffer systems to achieve the desired pH levels.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation
  • Knowledge of conjugate acid-base pairs
  • Familiarity with buffer preparation techniques
  • Basic chemistry concepts related to pH and acidity
NEXT STEPS
  • Research how to prepare a buffer using acetic acid and sodium acetate for pH 4.2
  • Explore the use of phosphate buffers for achieving pH 7.3
  • Investigate the preparation of a borate buffer for pH 9.7
  • Learn about the role of ionic strength in buffer effectiveness
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, laboratory technicians, and researchers involved in buffer preparation and pH management in various scientific applications.

I have a Question that I cannot figure out:

Describe how to make a buffer with pHs of 4.2, 7.3, and 9.7. For each buffer, you will need to choose a different method. For ex., if you make a buffer using a conjugate pair, you cannot reuse this method for the other 2 buffers...

I just don't know where to go w/ it?? I've used pH=pKa + log (base/acid) for the 4.2 buffer and am just stuck...

thanks

I think what they mean is that you have to use different conjugate pairs, buffer by definition contains conjugate pair, so you can't make one without one

Please don't reuse old therads to ask new questions.
