Math: A Path Forward as a Senior in High School

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

A senior in high school expressing interest in mathematics should consider pursuing a math-related field. First-year courses typically include Calculus and Linear Algebra, along with an introduction to proofs. Students are encouraged to explore other subjects, such as chemistry and biology, to keep options open for potential shifts to physical science programs. For motivated students, reading "Elementary Analysis: The Theory of Calculus" can provide insight into advanced mathematical concepts encountered in second-year studies.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic mathematical concepts
  • Familiarity with high school-level Calculus
  • Knowledge of Linear Algebra fundamentals
  • Exposure to introductory proof techniques
NEXT STEPS
  • Research first-year university math curriculum requirements
  • Explore introductory Analysis texts, specifically "Elementary Analysis: The Theory of Calculus"
  • Investigate interdisciplinary programs combining math with physical sciences
  • Look into online resources or courses for Calculus and Linear Algebra
USEFUL FOR

High school seniors interested in pursuing mathematics or related fields, educators advising students on academic paths, and anyone considering a transition to a math-focused college program.

First year math is usually very general (in fact, first year science is also really general). You will be required to take Calculus and Linear Algebra for sure and perhaps some other courses like an intro to proofs. My point is that you should be able to test the waters of math while taking some other courses in programs that may interest you (ie taking some chemistry and biology courses in case you may want to switch to a physical science program).

If you are really motivated you may want to find an intro Analysis book such as "Elementary Analysis: The Theory of Calculus", which is probably difficult for a high school student but it will give you a good idea of what you're going to do in your second year in math.
