What's the most hard-driving music ever recorded? Some might go for the MC5 and their Kick Out The Jams but either of these two gets my vote. I'd have to flip a coin.

Though if you take the visual aspect into account you can't beat this one.

Too machine gun for me. It's a popular style these days but sixteenth notes on the bass drum is not my bag, nome sane.

This album got me into death metal. I suspect OP had something else in mind. I’m not familiar with the genre of music in the OP. I’m not a musician but I think the following songs are an intersection between death metal and the genre in the OP.

Only old school death metal is worth listening to.

I do not know what "hard driving" is supposed to mean, but I am tring a listen to the link in post #6, and it is mostly noisy. Trying a forward into it,... still mostly noise.

Let's take a listen to something different:
Cold Hands Boogie _b_
or you might try hearing same thing,
Cold Hands Boogie _a_

I think it is probably fairly subjective, but they mean "intense."

Usually: fast, aggressive, chaotic, or some combination of the above.

Thanks. I can understand. The one difference is about if what I hear is either chaotic or noisy; those are when I can no longer perceive as music.

From "classical" music, the first thing that comes to my mind is Hekla by the Icelandic composer Jón Leifs, which is intended to depict an eruption of the volcano with that name.

I'd say that drive is a propulsive rhythmic feel that evokes forward motion, as opposed to groove or swing or rock and roll that invokes back and forth motion as in dance. Here's something that sounds like galloping over plains at breakneck speed, perhaps pursued by a Parthian whose skill with bow will put paid to you should you falter.

They are from Kazakhstan, where some people still do such things. Encore!

European classical music is strongly inclined toward drive though rubato interferes with that. Eine Kleine Nachtmusic has its stretches of strong drive. I like this low-rubato movement thanks to George Solti. It's like the gods getting ready for war with the unstoppability of a loaded cement mixer truck. Better not get in the way.

"Chaotic" means different things to different writers, from what I can tell. For some it refers to a noisy sound, for others to frenetic activity. To me it signals anything abrupt or random. "Noisy" usually means distortion including terrible production, which can sometimes bring out melody but just as easy produce a white noise "screen" over whatever is barely discernible in the background.

Here is something that's very raw but doesn't drive. It rocks back and forth. I'm recommending mostly be cause she compares herself to a cement mixer truck! Such a coincidence should not pass unremarked upon.

From hard to soft:

Love it when in the next one he "sings" "Urgh!"

...and someone mentioned traditional black metal. With these guys you can almost smell the Norwegian wooden churches burning, points for scene show anyway:

Talk about angry young men!

You kinda have to see the video to really appreciate it. Sorry if I've posted it before. I love it when the angry young man screams "UGH":

EDIT: Hah. I did already post it. It just popped on my playlist again. Sorry. I really enjoy this one. Man he was one angry young man.

Not my favorite band (although I did enjoy "The Dirt"), but this tune straight-up kicks a$$:

Here's Meshuggah's rhythm section only while they're jamming a little:

Also, the drums on this Nevermore "ballad" is unbelievable:

I know what you mean. I understand the words but the deeper meaning is kinda lost on me. Then again it's the last track on the album so maybe there's some context we're missing out on.

Yeah, I know. Hardly hard driving.

But accidentally posted it in this thread in reponse to this:

Oh thanks. Whenever I hear that word, it repeats over & over in my mind, like a bubble-gum pop song from the '60's.

where it really doesn't belong.

EDIT: and I really don't know where that SPOILER came from....?

Not sure if this link will work. OK, there *was* audio. Turn down the volume before playing it.

  • #39
Since in this thread there's some variation in the interpretation of "hard-driving",
let me throw in these two:

Ace of Spades on FLOPPOTRON (with some Hard-Drives)

Compressorhead Ace of Spades

( Here's #1341 "Ace of Spades" from the Covers thread.)

"Driving"? Yes. "Hard Driving"? Maybe.
Old school. What's the genre? "Triphop"? I'm an EDM fanatic and collector but mostly, psytrance, trance, electronic, techno, and house. I have some very esoteric tastes.

Also have patience here. Something really profound happens at 6:17.

EDIT: "Morning techno".

Electronic or techno. It's hard to classify:

Haha. Hard driving indeed! Reminds me of Napalm Death or maybe Deicide. Funny they haven't been mentioned yet.

EDIT: And sorry! Deicide was mentioned!

And something as rare as a self-proclaimed Christian heavy metal band (Devildriver - End of the Line):

and of course Meshuggah - Rational Gaze:

Or maybe rather Millenium Cyanide Christ:

Fun genre. The first one had the word "Japanesque" springing to my mind. Second one "punky jazz". :woot:

I was suprised that this "Japanesque" style could be so.... well yeah "heavy metally", or perhaps rather "punk". :woot:

Initially I thought he was a child (which relatively speaking I guess he is (was?)). Impressive though! And on a western with metal strings no less!

EDIT: Hah! His Master of Puppets is unbelievable!
