Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying and speculating on the nature of various mystery objects presented in a linked image. Participants explore potential uses, historical contexts, and characteristics of these items, engaging in a mix of guessing and reasoning.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that object #570 resembles an old typewriter case but speculate it might be a salesman's sample case due to its dimensions.
  • Object #228 is proposed by some as potentially being a compass or a folding t-square, with considerations about its practicality for fitting into a toolbox.
  • Participant comments on object #471 indicate it may be part of a cipher device, drawing comparisons to the Enigma machine used in WWII.
  • There are questions about the purpose of the wooden part of object #436, with some suggesting it could be for storage or display, while others speculate it might serve a functional purpose like holding receipts.
  • Multiple participants express uncertainty about the final use of the molds associated with object #570, indicating a lack of clarity on their purpose.
  • Several posts list various items as "Decoration," suggesting a possible consensus on their aesthetic rather than functional value, though this is not universally accepted.
  • One participant raises a question about the significance of the numbers 00, 99, and 88, hinting at a deeper or misleading implication behind their similarity.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the identities or purposes of the mystery objects, with multiple competing views and ongoing speculation present throughout the discussion.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the objects' functions and historical contexts remain unverified, and the discussion reflects a variety of interpretations without definitive conclusions.

570 looks like an old typewriter case, but the dimensions are too small. Perhaps a salesman's sample case?

#228 looks like it could be a compass or folding t-square (or both?). It sure would be easier to fit into a toolbox that way!

Evo, note that the masks also go with #570...and I think that's more the question of what those are about than the case they're in.

471 looiks like part of some cypher device. Like enigma, you know? the German WWII unbreakable code maker? It had wheels inside wheels that changed the code as it was being used, and only another identical machine could unscramble the code? That and British intelligence?

Do you think the wooden part of the first item (436) is just for storage, display?

When I look at that, I think, "Do not fold, SPINDLE, or mutilate." (Instructions given regarding the answer sheets at the beginning of every standardized exam.) The pointy ends make me think it might be a fancy spindle...an old way of keeping receipts from flying away by stabbing them onto a stick.

Why would 00, 99, 88, be the same?

Oh, well, they're molds, but what final use I can't imagine.

That's what they want you to think!
