Mystery Sound Competition: Who Can Name the Source?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The thread revolves around a mystery sound competition where participants attempt to identify the source of a sound. The discussion includes various hypotheses about the sound's characteristics and the challenges of creating similar sounds. It encompasses elements of exploration, speculation, and technical inquiry.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express uncertainty about the difficulty of the sound identification and suggest clues may be needed.
  • There are claims regarding the use of a bandpass filter to alter the sound, with some participants agreeing on the extent of filtering involved.
  • One participant shares a link to a video that they believe makes identifying the sound easier, but they express difficulty in finding a similarly interesting sound for future rounds.
  • Another participant suggests that the sound could be an electric typewriter, but this is quickly challenged.
  • Questions arise about the playback speed of the sound and whether it is played in real time, with some uncertainty about the fidelity of the audio.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the identification of the sound or the characteristics of the audio. Multiple competing hypotheses and uncertainties remain throughout the discussion.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations regarding the clarity of the sound and the conditions under which it is played, including questions about playback speed and audio fidelity that remain unresolved.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in sound identification, audio processing, and those who enjoy participatory games related to sound may find this discussion engaging.

I don't recall ever trying a mystery sound competition. So, in the fashion of other competitions, whoever can name the source of the sound picks out the next mystery. The imagery in this video is irrelevant and not intended as a clue or a false lead.

Too hard? No interest? Need a clue?

Am I hearing a bandpass filter being used to alter the sound?

No doubt there is an astronomical degree of filtering involved.

That made it rather easy to find:

However, I don't have any idea how to come up with an equally interesting sound.

I was searching on "sounds of space" when trying to figure this out but found this instead:

That was unusual but doesn't have to be definitive of the entries. However, if you wish to pass, maybe dlgoff can give it a go in your place? Your choice.

Yes, dlgoff is welcome.

Assuming anyone wants to play!

dlgoff, are you looking, absent, or passing?

Too hard? Try listing to it at a slower speed. Not the best fidelity though.

An electric typewriter?

Nope. Maybe a hint?

Only if someone else asks for one. I'd like to ponder this a bit more first.

Correction: I do have a couple of questions. Is this played in real time? And, would it normally repeat where the audio ends?

I'm not sure about the .wav speed being the real time speed but it could be.

No repeat. It's just one event.
