AI Thread Summary
A user is seeking a simple accelerometer for a demo kit to measure the velocity and acceleration of a reciprocating slider. They require a ready-to-fit device that is compatible with an output display and is economical. Suggestions include using airbag triggers and phonograph pickups, which have been effective in detecting movement in biomedical applications. Key considerations for the accelerometer include whether a 1, 2, or 3-axis device is needed, the nature of the acceleration (constant or variable), and the expected range of acceleration. The discussion emphasizes the importance of selecting the right type of sensor based on these requirements.

Hi,
I am trying to build a demo kit to show the velocity and acceleration of a slider that reciprocates. I am from mechanical engineering background and hence need help in finding good acceleratio measurement device. My requirements are this:
1. Should be something like a ready to fit.
2. Needs to be compatible for an output display.
3. Should be an economical option.
4. Saw one app in mobile phone showing velocity and acceleration of it. Was very simple and exactly the way I wanted.

Pl. suggest some good types and makes. Thanks.

Engineering news on Phys.org
Two relatively inexpensive sensors are airbag triggers and phonograph pickups (add a weight to the needle). I used both in my biomedical systems business for many years to detect movement of subjects when recording various physio parameters. TI and Motorola were the airbag sensors but other vendors are also out there.

A few questions
1. do you need 1, 2 or 3 axis accelerometer?
2. Is the acceleration constant or slowly varying or is it very variable with time?
3. What is the expected range of acceleration?

Thread 'I need a concave mirror with a focal length length of 150 feet'
I need to cut down a 3 year old dead tree from top down so tree causes no damage with small pieces falling. I need a mirror with a focal length of 150 ft. 12" diameter to 36" diameter will work good but I can't think of any easy way to build it. Nothing like this for sale on Ebay. I have a 30" Fresnel lens that I use to burn stumps it works great. Tree service wants $2000.
Hi all, i have some questions about the tesla turbine: is a tesla turbine more efficient than a steam engine or a stirling engine ? about the discs of the tesla turbine warping because of the high speed rotations; does running the engine on a lower speed solve that or will the discs warp anyway after time ? what is the difference in efficiency between the tesla turbine running at high speed and running it at a lower speed ( as fast as possible but low enough to not warp de discs) and: i...
