Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around predicting the next major disaster in the US, with a focus on the perceived inevitability of such events and the public's reaction to them. Participants explore various types of disasters, including hurricanes and the impact of global warming, while also touching on societal responses and preparedness.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express frustration with hindsight bias regarding past disasters, questioning the narrative that they were obvious.
  • One participant suggests that the next disaster will likely be another hurricane, citing the predictability of hurricanes when forecasts indicate potential landfall.
  • Global warming is mentioned as a factor that could influence future disasters, with a suggestion that ratifying the Kyoto protocol might help mitigate damage.
  • Another participant counters the idea of the Kyoto treaty, labeling it a disaster itself, indicating a difference of opinion on its effectiveness.
  • Several posts include jokes and off-topic comments, which some participants view as detracting from the seriousness of the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the nature of future disasters or the effectiveness of proposed solutions. There are competing views on the impact of global warming and the Kyoto protocol, as well as differing opinions on the relevance of past disasters.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes references to specific disasters like Hurricane Katrina and 9/11, but lacks detailed analysis of their causes or implications. The mention of partisan jokes suggests a potential distraction from the main topic.

Ok what i always find annoying is when a disaster happens somewhere and everyone goes "It was so obvious! Anyone could see it coming! The whole government/military/rescue organizations/whoever was involved was incompetant!" and then comes the slew of random articles from here and there making it seem so obvious.

Soooooooooo, what's the next disaster that's going to hit the US? I'm sure its so obvious, so out with it and exactly how should we prepare for such a disaster to minimize the damage. Go for it!

*waits for the 40 partisan jokes that contribute nothing*

Can you name some specific disasters besides Katrina where people say it was so obvious?

You have to admit when a hurricane is forcasted to possibly make landfall within a few days everybody could see it coming.

The next disaster will be another hurricane.

The next major disaster?

Your pointless threads dumbing down PF and America.

9/11 for one. Enron. The problem with Katrina's little "it was so obvious" people were people making references to random articles 1 or 2 years earlier

What about the effects of global warming? I think the US ratifying the Kyoto protocol to cut emissions would minimize the damage.

The Kyoto treaty is a disaster itself
