PF PHOTO CONTEST - Flower Power (mar 21-28)

In summary: Beautiful shot! This is an Arizona desert wildflower commonly called a prickly poppy. One look and the name is self explanatory. It's a pretty flower but it's also pretty spiny. You might not be able to handle it if you get too close.

Flower time! Yeah!

Contest Rules:

1. Any digital photo or digitally-scanned photo relevant to the theme will be accepted within the contest period. In case there's a gray area, or you're not sure if the picture is suitable, check with me first.

2. Please resize your digital photo to no more than 650 x 490 or 490 x 650 pixels. You may also crop your picture if you wish. You are also allowed to adjust the brightness and contrast of your picture but these should not dramatically alter the look of the picture. But other than those, any form of picture editing or modification is not allowed. This is a photo contest, not a picture editing/special effect contest. You may add a watermark or your name/nickname to the photo for identification purposes.

3. Upload your photos to any of the photo servers such as imageshack or photobucket. Then post it the relevant contest thread and link your picture using the img command. PM me if you do not know how.

4. Only ONE picture per member per contest. Once a picture is posted, it cannot be changed other than a total withdrawl by that member from that week's photo contest. Exceptions will be made for modification to comply with the rules, such as resizing.

5. At the end of the contest period, I will open a poll and every PF member can vote for the picture they like best.

6. Note that in case we have a large number of entries, I will do the polling in more than one thread. If that's the case, you can vote in each of the polling threads. The photos will be assigned in the polling threads in the order they were submitted.

7. These pictures must be something that you took, not something taken off someone else's photo albums or taken by someone else. I have no way of checking if you did this, so we'll go by the honor system.

8. You can use a picture only once. Once it is used in a contest, it cannot be reused in another contest.

9. Please post only pictures meant for submission in this thread.

Well it's a very beautiful one at that, so I think that makes up for it.

I don't have a chance going up against Andre's terabytes of flower island images, so, I'll just post something I hope to see in another couple of months. Blossoms on my apple trees.

I have a picture almost identical to that, but a different flower. Can't remember what it is called, but a heat loving/desert flower. (without the inner petals, more like a trillium)

So I guess I can't submit THAT one now...

Zapper, have you ever given up your secrets on how to make orchids bloom?

What state do you live in, please ZZ? And I will make sure to NEVER visit that state...

I hope I remember to go through all my tulip fields before the 28th...

ZZ lives in the state of denial. (Chicago) He does get some pretty impressive inflorescences, though. Can't argue with the end-product.

I wish the sky was more blue, it blends into the background here... But hey, what can I ask for when I am from Seattle!

(Is it just me on my pc? Or do the flowers look extremely out of focus in this shot? They are in perfect focus on my macintosh... grumble...)

It's really no secret, just different. Plant the epiphyte type orchids in some wood chips in a transparant glas pot. The green roots need light. Be sure to give soft water with a low carbonate contend with a small tough of fertilizer every week as soon as new buts emerge and you may even have a new flowers before the old are totally gone.

My bet is that picturetrail lost sharpness when converting to low quality jpg.

It qualifies as a flower even thought it doesn't look like one because of crappy camera and picture taking skills.

I wanted to have a flower in my room but it's almost dead now:(.
Will be getting "forget me not" now

I figured someone would submit a photo of tulips. Is this at the actual festival or just a free standing field somewhere?

Its the actual tulip festival. Hanging out with a million people looking at flowers all at once isn't what I would NORMALLY do on a weekend, but I had a cousin in town. So, unfortunately, most of the field pictures have numerous people in them... But it is fun once per quarter century or so. ;)

I just realized how terrible my camera is (The lighting of this picture is pretty bad as well). I keep intending to get a new one, but it never seems to fit into the budget.
