Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around a problem related to rotational inertia in a pulley system, specifically focusing on the changes in the layout of the disk and pulley as described in a physics exam question.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • The original poster attempts to understand why the rotational inertia would change and seeks clarification on the layout changes of the disk and pulley. Some participants explore potential errors in data interpolation as a reason for discrepancies in inertia estimation.

Discussion Status

The discussion is ongoing, with participants exploring various interpretations of the problem. Some guidance has been offered regarding the impact of the string on the system, suggesting a direction for further inquiry.

Contextual Notes

Participants are referencing scoring guidelines and discussing the complexities of real-world factors that may affect theoretical calculations, indicating a need for deeper understanding of the assumptions involved.

The problem can be found here. I am stuck on problem 2 d.

Homework Equations

I = m(g-a)R2 / a //found in part c

The Attempt at a Solution

I don't understand why the Rotational Inertia would change. Can someone describe to me the change in the layout of the disk and pulley too?

One possible answer could be that the data interpolation led to a certain error in the estimation of inertia.

Other reasons I can't really imagine.

data interpolatin? What's that?
