Post Paper for Feedback: Is it Safe?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the risks associated with posting academic papers for feedback on public forums, specifically within the context of Physics Forums. Participants emphasize the likelihood of intellectual theft, particularly if the author lacks co-authors. The consensus is that seeking feedback in such an open environment is inadvisable, as it has historically led to negative outcomes for authors. The rules of the forum explicitly discourage speculative theories and personal ideas, reinforcing the importance of traditional peer review processes.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of academic publishing protocols
  • Familiarity with peer review processes
  • Knowledge of intellectual property rights
  • Awareness of online forum etiquette and rules
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the academic peer review process in detail
  • Learn about protecting intellectual property before publication
  • Explore alternative platforms for academic feedback, such as ResearchGate
  • Investigate the implications of sharing research ideas in public forums
USEFUL FOR

Researchers, academics, and graduate students seeking guidance on safe practices for sharing and receiving feedback on their work, as well as those interested in understanding the risks of public discourse in academic settings.

Or will there be a good chance of it being stolen?

No original thought allowed.

From the rules page:
Speculative or Personal Theories:
Physics Forums is not intended as an alternative to the usual professional venues for discussion and review of new ideas, e.g. personal contacts, conferences, and peer review before publication. If you have a new theory or idea, this is not the place to look for feedback on it or help in developing it.
On that page there is a link leading to a FAQ that describes the reasoning behind the rule.

You got no co-authors?

Certainly! There is no reason for other crackpots to not steal it and submit it themselves, if you are foolish enough to do such a thing.

But the more puzzling question here is, why do you have to even resort to posting it on an open, public forum to get feedback? You are not the first one to ask, or want to do this in this forum, and each time this has not turn out well.
