SUMMARY

A Prony brake is an effective tool for measuring horsepower (HP) when properly constructed and utilized. In this discussion, a DIY Prony brake was built using wood, featuring a 1-foot arm, which successfully measured 0.75 HP at 180 RPM with a 22-pound weight. The shaft diameter of 2 inches is relevant, as it influences torque calculations. Accurate power measurement relies on ensuring that all torque is counteracted by the weights and arm, along with adequate heat dissipation during operation.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of torque and horsepower calculations
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical engineering principles
  • Experience with DIY project construction and materials
  • Familiarity with heat dissipation methods in mechanical systems
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of torque and horsepower calculations
  • Learn about the construction and design of Prony brakes
  • Explore methods for effective heat dissipation in mechanical systems
  • Investigate the impact of shaft diameter on torque measurement
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, hobbyists, and DIY enthusiasts interested in mechanical testing, particularly those looking to measure horsepower accurately using a Prony brake setup.

Is a prony brake a fairly accurate way to test HP. I built a prony brake just with wood to fit on a rotating shaft with a 1 foot arm. I get .75 of 1 HP if the shaft is rotating about 180 rpm and the arm lifts and holds 22 lbs. The diameter of the shaft is 2" - does that matter? And is a prony brake very accurate? thanks from a tinkerer.

As long as all torque is counteracted by your weights/arm and nothing else, then yes a de Prony brake will give you the foundations of a good power measurement. Just make sure you can dissipate the heat well enough under steady conditions.

Let us know how you get on, this should be a nice little project.
