Kris Kristofferson, a Rhodes scholar with a deft writing style and rough charisma who became a country music superstar and an A-list Hollywood actor, has died.

Kristofferson died at his home on Maui, Hawaii, on Saturday, family spokeswoman Ebie McFarland said in an email. He was 88.

McFarland said Kristofferson died peacefully, surrounded by his family. No cause was given.

Yeah, it's so sad. I'm in that stage where my favorite artists, teachers, and mentors are disappearing before my eyes. Six months ago it was my mentor from GE and then my inspiring math teacher about a month ago and a week ago it was my scout leader and former GE boss.

Now all my favorite singers are starting to fade away too.

He was an excellent actor. I remember him as the bad cop in Lone Star by John Sayles. And several other powerful performances.
