SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on selecting a spring for a machine component with specific requirements: a free length of 20 inches, an outer diameter of 3 inches, the ability to stretch to 60 inches, and a force of 15 pounds when stretched. Key factors to consider include pitch, wire diameter, and material selection. The user seeks guidance on the design process and additional considerations for spring selection. A helpful resource provided is the eFunda spring design guide.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of spring mechanics and design principles
  • Familiarity with material properties relevant to spring manufacturing
  • Knowledge of wire diameter and its impact on spring performance
  • Basic skills in mechanical drawing and CAD software for component design
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the calculation of spring constants using Hooke's Law
  • Learn about different materials suitable for spring manufacturing, such as stainless steel and music wire
  • Explore the impact of pitch on spring performance and fatigue life
  • Review the eFunda spring design guide for detailed design methodologies
USEFUL FOR

Mechanical engineering students, design engineers, and anyone involved in selecting or designing springs for mechanical components.

I am doing a project for school and i need to select a spring for part of it.

Requirements of Spring:
1. Free length 20 in
2. Outer diameter 3 in
3. Has to be able to stretch to around 60 in
4 When streched to 60 in need to provide around 15lb force

I need to draw this for a component of a machine. so i have to decide on pitch, wire diameter, and material. Can some one give me an idea of a process i should follow or if i need to take other factors into consideration as well.
