SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the impact of AMD Athlon 64 technology on game design, specifically highlighting its role in the development of "Shadow Ops: Red Mercury." Wim Stocks from Atari emphasizes that the capabilities of AMD64 allow for advanced features such as enhanced physics, artificial intelligence, and detailed graphics that were unattainable on 32-bit platforms. Additionally, the transition to 64-bit architecture enables the implementation of THX 5.1 acoustic sound across all game levels without compromising performance.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of AMD Athlon 64 architecture
  • Familiarity with game design principles
  • Knowledge of audio technologies, specifically THX 5.1 sound
  • Experience with 32-bit vs. 64-bit programming differences
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the performance benefits of AMD64 architecture in gaming
  • Explore advanced game design techniques utilizing 64-bit technology
  • Learn about implementing THX 5.1 sound in video games
  • Investigate historical examples of 64-bit games and their development challenges
USEFUL FOR

Game developers, audio engineers, and technology enthusiasts interested in the evolution of gaming technology and the advantages of 64-bit architecture.

  • “AMD Athlon 64 technology is revolutionizing game design and, given the tremendous power and freedom AMD64 offers to our game designers, we are able to create scenes, physics, artificial intelligence, map sizes and graphics detail that we only dreamed of on 32-bit platforms,“ said Wim Stocks, executive vice president, sales and marketing at Atari. “Using 32-bit code alone, we were unable to offer THX 5.1 acoustic sound with every level of detail enabled and still maintain a playable game; with AMD64 64-bit technology we can now do that and much more.”

That's not the world's first 64 bit game. I've played a 3D-tetris clone on my SGI, that I *know* is compiled natively for 64bit.
