Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the recent crash of a Russian airliner in the Sinai peninsula, with participants exploring various potential causes, including mechanical failure, terrorism, and maintenance issues. The conversation includes speculation on the implications of the crash and the responses from authorities.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants note that an ISIS affiliate claimed responsibility for the crash, but others argue that the missile capabilities of such groups are insufficient to reach the altitude at which the plane was flying.
  • There is speculation about the possibility of mechanical failure, with some suggesting that the aircraft's condition may have contributed to the crash.
  • Participants discuss the implications of a distress call made by the pilot, which could provide insights into the events leading up to the crash.
  • Some contributions highlight the potential for structural failure or maintenance issues, referencing past incidents of midair breakups due to similar causes.
  • Conflicting reports from officials regarding the cause of the crash, including suggestions of a bomb versus mechanical failure, are noted, with no consensus reached on the matter.
  • Participants reference historical crashes to draw parallels and explore the mechanics of potential failures that could lead to a breakup in flight.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a range of views on the cause of the crash, with no consensus on whether it was due to terrorism, mechanical failure, or other factors. Disagreement persists regarding the credibility of claims made by various authorities and the implications of the evidence presented.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations in the discussion regarding the availability of definitive evidence and the reliance on preliminary reports, which may not fully capture the complexities of the situation.

Russia suspends all flights to Egypt
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-34743216
The BBC understands that UK officials received intelligence based on intercepted communications between militants in the Sinai Peninsula, indicating an explosive device may have been put inside or on top of the luggage just before the plane took off.

An unnamed investigator has told French news agency AFP that the plane's flight data recorder had shown that "everything was normal during the flight, absolutely normal, and suddenly there was nothing", suggesting a "violent, sudden" explosion.

Russian plane black boxes point to 'attack', Putin halts flights

(AFP) The flight data and voice recorders showed "everything was normal" until both failed at 24 minutes after takeoff from the Sharm el-Sheikh resort Saturday, pointing to "a very sudden explosive decompression," one source said.

"Meanwhile, the head of Russia's emergencies ministry said Russian experts had taken samples from the crashed jet and were testing it for any traces of explosives."

CBS News reports "Explosion heard on cockpit voice recorder of downed Russian airliner"
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/explosion-heard-on-cockpit-voice-recorder-of-downed-russian-airliner/
Sources say the sound of an explosion can be heard on the cockpit voice recorder -- although that still does not conclusively point to a bomb. But with U.S. intelligence closer to a consensus that this was a terrorist act, security is being stepped up at overseas airports with direct service to the U.S.

Ayman el-Muqadem told a news conference in Cairo that an analysis of the noise was underway to identify its nature. He said the way the debris was scattered over a wide area indicated the Airbus A321-200 broke up mid-air, but initial observations don't shed light on what caused it.
Was the noise caused by the sudden/explosive decompression, or mechanical failure precipitating the decompression, or a bomb?

I also saw comments in the media about a 'series of heat flashes'.

The FSB offered a $50 million reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible, and Putin said Russia would be relentless in its pursuit.

Bomb that downed Russian plane in Egypt placed in main cabin: report
http://news.yahoo.com/bomb-downed-russian-plane-egypt-placed-main-cabin-100839080--sector.html

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A bomb that downed a Russian plane in Egypt last month had been placed in the aircraft's main cabin not in the cargo compartment as reported earlier, the daily Kommersant said on Wednesday citing an unnamed source.

The newspaper, citing a source close to the investigation of the crash, said the epicentre of the explosion appeared to have been at the rear of the cabin near the tail section.
Ostensibly, this is corroborated by residue in the vicinity. This revelation would be consistent with the tail section being separated from the rest of the plane.
