Societies and Journals in Optical-Mechanical Engineering

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the societies and journals relevant to the field of Optical-Mechanical Engineering, particularly focusing on conferences and research literature. Participants share their experiences and preferences regarding professional organizations and publications in this area.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • The original poster (OP) inquires about societies and journals used in Optical Engineering, mentioning SPIE and IEEE as prominent options.
  • One participant suggests the Society for Information Display (SID) as a resource they have followed for years.
  • Another participant expresses a lighthearted reluctance to contribute due to not graduating, prompting a discussion about past reading experiences in school.
  • One participant reflects on their enjoyment of local meetings and national conferences related to SID, particularly during the early days of commercial LCDs and VR HUDs.
  • A later reply indicates that as an undergraduate, they focused more on foundational topics rather than familiarizing themselves with the latest literature.
  • The OP recommends the Electrochemical Society and its journals for those interested in materials and fabrication for optoelectronic devices.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants share various societies and journals without reaching a consensus on a definitive list. Multiple perspectives on preferred resources and experiences are presented, indicating a lack of agreement on which societies or journals are most relevant.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express differing levels of familiarity with various journals and societies, and there is a mention of a focus on foundational studies versus advanced literature, which may influence their recommendations.

Hi folks.

For those in Optical Engineering, detector work or the Optical-Mechanical Engineering field I was curious which society do you use for conferences and research work. Which journals do you tend to look at for research literature.

I see SPIE and IEEE are the prominent ones, any others?

Cheers.

Goofball.

What did you like to read while you were in school? Did you read SID Proceedings at all? I enjoyed going to local meetings/seminars and I think I went to one or two national conferences. That was in the early days of commercial LCDs and VR HUDs, Exciting stuff.

Nope. I was an undergrad, so I was more focused on basics than on getting familiar with all the new literature.
