Solar physics: coronal holes & sunspot cycles

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the potential relationship between coronal holes and the sunspot cycle, particularly in the context of the solar minimum. Participants explore whether a decline in sunspots correlates with changes in the frequency of coronal holes.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions if there is a relationship between coronal holes and the sunspot cycle, noting a personal observation of fewer sunspots but unchanged coronal hole frequency.
  • Another participant shares a paper that may provide insights into the topic, although it focuses on the location of coronal holes rather than their frequency.
  • A participant expresses concern that the paper does not address the frequency of coronal holes, indicating that information on this topic is limited and often behind paywalls.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the relationship between coronal holes and sunspot cycles, and there are multiple viewpoints regarding the availability of relevant information.

Contextual Notes

Participants note limitations in available research, particularly regarding the frequency of coronal holes and the accessibility of relevant studies.

Does anyone know if there is a relationship between corneal holes and the sunspot cycle?
As we move in now towards solar minimum should we expect to see a big decline in corona holes?
I have noticed a lot less sun spots over the last few months but the frequency of coronal holes seems to be unchanged, but this just my unscientific impression
Any real knowledge much appreciated

Thank you for posting this , I had a brief read but it appears to be taking about the location of coronal holes during the solar cycle, not so much the frequency. or did i miss that?

true, it didn't really get into that much ... info seems to be sparse and ones that hinted with the info are behind paywalls :frown:

I will keep an eye out for anything more substantial
