Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around a video captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) showcasing a solar tornado, a plasma event occurring on the sun. Participants explore the characteristics of this phenomenon, including its formation, behavior, and the scientific observations made during the event.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant shares a link to a video of a solar tornado captured by NASA, describing it as an enormous plasma "tornado" that erupted over a day.
  • Another participant comments on the video, noting the eerie music accompanying it.
  • A different participant references a similar cyclonic plasma event that occurred in 2015, detailing its duration, temperature, and the speeds of the plasma involved, while providing links to additional sources.
  • One participant humorously suggests the event could inspire a Syfy movie plot.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express interest in the solar tornado and related phenomena, but there is no consensus on the implications or interpretations of the events discussed. The conversation includes both factual sharing and light-hearted commentary.

Contextual Notes

Some claims about the solar tornado's characteristics, such as temperature and speed, depend on specific observational data and may not be universally accepted without further context.

Nice video of a solar tornado.

A NASA spacecraft has captured spectacular video of an enormous plasma "tornado" spinning off the sun.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory probe, or SDO, watched the dark-hued twister churn and ultimately erupt over the course of one day, from April 29 to 30. Mission scientists used the spacecraft 's imagery to create an 18-second-long video of the dramatic solar tornado.

Better on the sun than here! What's with the spooky music? :)

A cyclonic plasma event occurred last week
A small, but complex mass of plasma gyrated and spun about over the course of 40 hours above the surface of the Sun (Sept. 1-3, 2015). It was stretched and pulled back and forth by powerful magnetic forces but not ripped apart in this sequence. The temperature of the ionized iron particles observed in this extreme ultraviolet wavelength of light was about 2.8 million degrees C.

SDO project scientist William Pesnell told Huffington Post that the material in the solar tornado spun at speeds of about 10,000 mph.

It's height above the surface of the sun was approximately 5 Earth diameters.

Ooh, do I smell the title/plot of a new "made for Syfy" movie?
