AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around the mechanical aptitude test involving a system of gears. Participants analyze the effect of applying a force to the left on a toothed axle system. It is concluded that the system will jam due to the alternating rotation of the gears, which leads to a conflict in movement. The reasoning emphasizes that an even number of gears in a circle will result in the system being unable to move freely. Overall, the consensus is that the applied force will cause the system to jam.

hi everybody..

Homework Statement

we gave a force to this system (shwon in image) direction to the left;what will happen to this system (toothed axe) will move to the left or to the right or will be jammed?

welcome to pf!

hi zizodev! welcome to pf!

tell us what you think, and then we'll comment!

i think will be jammed(frozzen)..:)

yes, but why?

you have to give a reason!

(hint: if we treat the two gears on the same axle as one, there are 5 gears in a circle )

yeah, because the (2 gear connected with axe) will turn Anticlockwise, the 3 rd gear will turn clockwise, the 4th anticlokwise, the last one will turn clockwise (and that the rank will slide to the left and the originel force given will make the rank slide to the left and that will make the system jammed! and what about the C choice is there possibility to occure.

that's right!

a more general reason:

since alternate gears go opposite ways, any circle of gears that is not fixed must have an even number of gears

thank you tiny-tim for your help :)
