Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the structural integrity and safety of suspending a winch d-ring from a ceiling, specifically in the context of using it for a boat motor lifting system. Participants explore the calculations necessary to determine the holding power of the system, including the strength of the bolts and the implications of the roof truss configuration.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Experimental/applied

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes their setup using a trailer tying ring rated for over 1000 pounds, noting concerns about the holding capacity when suspended from lag bolts attached to a roof truss.
  • Another participant provides a reference for calculating the strength of the bolts, suggesting they may be rated for over 1000 pounds but emphasizes the need for caution.
  • A third participant shares a link to a resource for lag screw calculations, which may help in assessing the holding power of the system.
  • A later reply questions the appropriateness of the installation, suggesting the owner of the storage unit should be informed and recommending the use of a motor lift as a safer alternative.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the safety and adequacy of the current setup. There are multiple viewpoints regarding the calculations needed and the risks involved in the installation.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the specific type of roof truss, its dimensions, and existing loads, which could affect the overall holding capacity of the system. The discussion does not resolve these uncertainties.

I recently attached a trailer tying ring (3 1/2" x 3 1/2" d-ring with loop pressed into the hardware mounting plate) from a roof truss in a storage unit. The ring is rated for 1000+ pounds. My purpose was a boat motor lifting system. It worked great with an attached block and tackle and was effortless. Since I attached the ring system vertically to a roof truss stud, the ring holding rating capacity may be lower since the weight is now suspended by two 3/8" lag bolts that are attached with a backup plate and compression on the 2 x 4. Can someone give me a reference for calculating the holding power of such a system? Thank you.

Welcome to the PF.

Does the owner of the storage unit know you are doing this? You should consider just renting or buying a motor lift instead -- that would be much less risky. Thread is closed.
