AI Thread Summary
A PhD can lead to a CTO position, but an MBA is also valuable, depending on the individual's career path. Both degrees offer different advantages; a PhD provides deep technical expertise, while an MBA focuses on business management skills. The necessity of having both degrees varies based on the specific requirements of the company and the candidate's experience. Examples, such as the CTO of Lockheed Martin holding a PhD, illustrate successful pathways in technical management. Ultimately, the choice between a PhD and an MBA should align with career goals and the desired trajectory in the tech industry.

like a CTO? Is this possible with just PhD? Is this possible with MBA only ?Do you need a PhD and a MBA? Is it preferable?

It depends. Both career paths will take you there, it just depends on how long, the paths you will have to walk to get there, etc.

For example, I did a search and found that the CTO of Lockheed Martin (the world's largest defense contractor) has a PhD. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Ray_O_Johnson
