Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around selecting a master's program in theoretical physics in Spain or Italy. Participants share their experiences and preferences regarding various universities and their offerings, particularly in cosmology and high energy physics.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant is completing a bachelor's in Theoretical Physics at Trinity College Dublin and is exploring master's programs in Spain and Italy, expressing interest in cosmology, high energy physics, and theoretical condensed matter physics.
  • The Universidad Autónoma de Madrid is noted as a strong option for theoretical cosmology and QFT, along with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and Universitat de Barcelona, which are both considered good for cosmology.
  • The Balearic Islands University is mentioned as potentially focused on computational cosmology, with offerings in QFT and quantum systems.
  • In Italy, one participant has struggled to find universities offering master's courses focused solely on theory without lab work, mentioning SISSA's previous association with the University of Trento but noting a lack of current information.
  • Another participant suggests that Spain might be a better fit based on language and weather, particularly favoring Barcelona over Trento.
  • A later reply indicates a shift in preference towards Italy, specifically the Bologna master's course, which is described as comprehensive and taught in English.
  • There is a question about the participant's plans for pursuing a doctorate, to which they affirm their intention to continue.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying preferences for universities in Spain and Italy, with no consensus on the best option. Some lean towards Spain, while others favor Italy, particularly the Bologna program.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention specific universities and their perceived strengths, but there are limitations in the availability of information regarding certain programs, particularly in Italy.

I am completing the final year of my bachelors next academic year in Trinity College Dublin in Theoretical Physics, which is a 4 year course which contains courses on QFT, the Standard Model, Statistical mechanics, and General Relativity. I have been looking at masters courses in Spain and Italy primarily, and am wondering which universities in these two countries would be recommended for someone looking to pursue theoretical physics. The areas of physics I am most interested in at the moment are cosmology and high energy physics, and potentially theoretical condensed matter physics

In Spain I have looked at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, which seems to be the best for pure theoretical cosmology and QFT, and I have also been considering the two Barcelona Univeristies: Universitat Autonomou de Barcelona, and Universitat de Barcelona, with the prior potentially being slightly more theoretical focused, but both seem quite good for cosmology. I have also looked at the Balearic Islands University which seems potentially more focused on computational cosmology, while also having classes in QFT and quantum systems.

In Italy I have been unable so far to find University which offer master's courses that focus solely on theory, without having to also do labwork. I have looked at SISSA which seemed to before offer a masters in physics in association with the University of Trento, but I cannot seem to find any information on their website about this anymore.

If anyone has any personal experience at any of these universities or any information in helping me narrow down my choice, or any recommendations for universities I haven't looked at yet, that would be greatly appreciated.

Are you still leaning towards Spain? It seems a better fit just from what you already said but there are other considerations like language and weather which to me are both a bit better in Barcelona then Trento.

Actually at the moment I think I am leaning more towards Italy but that is just for the Bologna masters course which seems to be the most comprehensive theoretical physics masters taught in English in Spain and Italy, and then after I think UAM in Madrid and then Barcelona

Will you continue on for a doctorate?
