Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying the top MSc Physics programs in the UK, specifically focusing on condensed matter physics and comparing institutions like Oxford and Durham. Participants explore various universities and their strengths in different areas of physics.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest starting with the Russell Group as a basis for identifying top universities.
  • One participant lists their top 10 universities, including University of Birmingham, University of Bristol, and University of Cambridge, among others.
  • Another participant provides a different list that includes University of Leeds and St Andrews University, indicating a variety of opinions on the best programs.
  • There is a mention that the University of Cambridge's Part III and the MSc at Imperial College London are considered strong for theoretical and mathematical physics.
  • Durham is noted for having a good program in string theory and high-energy physics (HEP), with a recent development of a particle accelerator.
  • Participants express uncertainty about the specifics of the Oxford Masters program in physics.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on a definitive list of top universities, indicating that opinions vary significantly based on personal research and specific areas of interest within physics.

Contextual Notes

Participants' lists and opinions are influenced by their individual experiences and the specific branches of physics they prioritize, leading to a lack of uniformity in the discussion.

Which are the top 10 univs in the U.K. offering MSc Physics?

I'm sure everyone would come up with a different list of 10. You might want to start with the Russell group, although that's more than 10:

Here's my top 10, just to start an argument :-)

* University of Birmingham
* University of Bristol
* University of Cambridge
* University of Edinburgh
* University of Glasgow
* Imperial College London
* University of Manchester
* University of Oxford
* University of Southampton
* University College London

Ooo :)

From my own research:

* University of Cambridge (Part III I believe it is in the tripos)
* University of Oxford
* Imperial College London
* University of Leeds
* St Andrews University
* University of Durham
* University College London
* University of Manchester
* Lancaster University
* University of Edinburgh

Plenty of other goods ones, though, such as Warwick, Sheffield, Heriot-Watt, Strathclyde.

Depends what type of Physics you're interested in, but to my knowledge Part III and the Imperial MSc are the best for theoretical/Mathematical physics, with Durham also having a good Stringy/HEP Theory Masters.

Whats the Oxford Masters like? I've never heard of it

Condensed matter physics.

Yeah, I've heard Durham is good for HEP, I believe they've just built a pretty good particle accelerator in an old coal mine.
