Torque estimation of an AC compressor

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the torque estimation required for driving an automobile AC compressor using a Brushless DC (BLDC) motor. The calculated torque requirement is 14 Nm, derived from a power consumption of 1.46 kW (equivalent to 2 HP) at a compressor speed of 1000 RPM. Participants confirm the calculation's accuracy and affirm that 14 Nm is a reasonable torque value for a BLDC motor operating at this speed.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of torque calculations in mechanical systems
  • Familiarity with Brushless DC (BLDC) motors
  • Knowledge of power consumption metrics in electrical engineering
  • Basic principles of automotive air conditioning systems
NEXT STEPS
  • Research torque requirements for various automotive applications
  • Learn about the specifications and performance of BLDC motors
  • Explore power consumption calculations for different AC compressor models
  • Investigate the integration of BLDC motors in automotive systems
USEFUL FOR

Automotive engineers, electrical engineers, and anyone involved in the design and optimization of vehicle HVAC systems.

Hi all,
I'm planning to drive the automobile ac compressor via a BLDC motor instead of IC engine. This is only when the vehicle is parked. Now, I'm trying to determine torque requirement. Is my calculation correct?
Power consumption: 1.46 kW
compressor speed : 1000rpm
torque=5252*hp/1000
= 14Nm

Is this value too high to be driven by a motor for a speed of 1000rpm?

Well, 14 N-m seems right.
You have a 1.46kW (2 HP) motor BLDC in your possession?

You did the calculation correctly (though a little roundabout)
