Transfer options in the LA area?

AI Thread Summary
Transferring from Mizzou to a school in the LA area presents several options, with UCLA and Caltech being the most recognized. While Caltech is highly competitive, UCLA may be more attainable, especially for majors in physics or sciences, though engineering majors face tougher admission due to priority given to California community college students. The current GPA of 3.912 and completion of modern physics and differential equations enhance the chances of acceptance. Other notable institutions include USC, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Irvine, and Cal State Fullerton, which also offer strong programs in science and engineering. It's suggested to explore additional resources at Mizzou for more tailored advice and options beyond the most prominent schools.

I am transferring from Mizzou (MU) to somewhere in the LA area over the summer. What are my best options? I know of caltech and UCLA. Caltech looks really difficult to get into. I probably can't get into Caltech, I assume I could get into UCLA. But is UCLA my best option for future career potential if I fail to get accepted at Caltech?

Total Credit hours: 70 + whatever I take next semester before transferring.
GPA: Currently at MU 3.912
I should have modern physics and up to diff EQ before transferring. Most or all genEd are finished.

USC is excellent. Top Shelf in engineering. Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Northridge and Long Beach State are also very good in science and engineering. It's not exactly in LA but UC Irvine in Orange County is very good as is Cal State Fullerton.

Depending on major, you shouldn't have a problem getting into UCLA for physics or any sciences. If you are a engineering major, you have a much harder chance to get in since they give priority to california CC students and the average for most of the engineering students for transfer is a 3.9. Anyways, good luck to you!

I went to Long Beach State and it was a great school. I would try UCLA first but Long Beach or one of the other State Universities would be a good fall back.

Your question is terribly vague. You didn't even say what you're majoring in. Surely at your current school, there are tons of resources to help you figure out answers to your questions. Besides the well-known schools, like UCLA, USC, and CalTech, there are many smaller schools in the area, like Harvey Mudd College, that might interest you as well. If all you can come up with is CalTech and UCLA, I'm guessing you haven't consulted those resources yet. Perhaps you should start there.

After a year of thought, I decided to adjust my ratio for applying the US/EU(+UK) schools. I mostly focused on the US schools before, but things are getting complex and I found out that Europe is also a good place to study. I found some institutes that have professors with similar interests. But gaining the information is much harder than US schools (like you have to contact professors in advance etc). For your information, I have B.S. in engineering (low GPA: 3.2/4.0) in Asia - one SCI...
I graduated with a BSc in Physics in 2020. Since there were limited opportunities in my country (mostly teaching), I decided to improve my programming skills and began working in IT, first as a software engineer and later as a quality assurance engineer, where I’ve now spent about 3 years. While this career path has provided financial stability, I’ve realized that my excitement and passion aren’t really there, unlike what I felt when studying or doing research in physics. Working in IT...
Hello, I’m an undergraduate student pursuing degrees in both computer science and physics. I was wondering if anyone here has graduated with these degrees and applied to a physics graduate program. I’m curious about how graduate programs evaluated your applications. In addition, if I’m interested in doing research in quantum fields related to materials or computational physics, what kinds of undergraduate research experiences would be most valuable?
