Trouble with Quoted Text: Anyone Else Experienced This Issue?

AI Thread Summary
Users are experiencing issues with quoted text in posts, where the quotation window displays too few lines and lacks a scroll bar for viewing the entire quote. Initially, it appears that the full text is not visible, but it has been noted that refreshing the browser often resolves the issue, restoring the complete quote. This problem seems to occur primarily in preview mode rather than after posting. Some users liken it to other discussion sites that limit visible text without an option to expand. Overall, the issue appears to be intermittent and may be related to browser optimization.

Recently I had trouble on two posts quoting text. I wonder if anyone else had the same experience.

The trouble was that although all the text was quoted, the quotation window on the post has too few lines, and there is no scroll bar to view the rest of the lines.

Here's an example. I tried to quote this entire post.
https://www.physicsforums.com/threa...es-webb-space-telescope.1008536/#post-6558722The result is:

JWST is not the only one. There are four other space telescope projects in the works. All four of them are designed to orbit the L2 point. According to the video, all four are intended to be simpler and cheaper than the JWST; not surprising because technology marches on.

2:54 Habitable Exoplanet observatory (HabEx)
8:53 Lynx X-Ray observatory
12:00 Origins Space Telescope (OST)
17:17 Large Ultraviolet, Optical, Infrared Surveyor (LUVOIR)

In edit mode, the entire text is visible, but in preview mode or after posting, the bottom lines are cut off.

EDIT: I proved myself wrong. When posted it is OK. Only in preview mode are lines cut off.

Was it still a problem after you refreshed the browser window one time? Quoted stuff often doesn't all show until you refresh the window, in my experience...

Aargh. I tried to test it with refresh, but now I can't reproduce the symptom at all.

Please disregard unless I can capture evidence with a screen shot.

Yeah, I see it sometimes too, but refreshing the browser window seems to restore the whole quote. Probably some Greg optimization thingy.

OK, you are now. . . disregarded. .

😏 . :DD

I've also seen it once or twice, and it goes away on a refresh. Visually, it's like discussion sites that hide all but the first couple of lines of long quotes, but with no "click to expand" type button.

I want to thank those members who interacted with me a couple of years ago in two Optics Forum threads. They were @Drakkith, @hutchphd, @Gleb1964, and @KAHR-Alpha. I had something I wanted the scientific community to know and slipped a new idea in against the rules. Thank you also to @berkeman for suggesting paths to meet with academia. Anyway, I finally got a paper on the same matter as discussed in those forum threads, the fat lens model, got it peer-reviewed, and IJRAP...
About 20 years ago, in my mid-30s (and with a BA in economics and a master's in business), I started taking night classes in physics hoping to eventually earn the science degree I'd always wanted but never pursued. I found physics forums and used it to ask questions I was unable to get answered from my textbooks or class lectures. Unfortunately, work and life got in the way and I never got further the freshman courses. Well, here it is 20 years later. I'm in my mid-50s now, and in a...
