Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around troubleshooting graphic display issues on a system running Red Hat Linux 9 (RH9) and Fedora Core 2 (FC2). Participants explore potential solutions for display resolution problems and system performance, as well as configuration file inquiries.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Troubleshooting, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant reports persistent graphic display issues with both FC2 and RH9, specifically mentioning crashes and login problems, and expresses a desire to use a higher resolution (1024x768) instead of the currently limited 800x600.
  • Another participant suggests trying Fedora Core 5 (FC5) as a potential solution, citing that FC2 is outdated and may not perform well on newer systems.
  • A participant mentions the system's age (P3) and notes that even FC2 runs slowly, indicating concerns about compatibility and performance with newer distributions.
  • There is a mention of the absence of the xorg.conf file in the expected directory, raising questions about the configuration and how to determine the correct settings for the monitor and video card.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best course of action, with differing opinions on whether to upgrade to a newer version of Fedora or to troubleshoot the existing installation further. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the optimal resolution settings and configuration file location.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the configuration of their systems, particularly regarding the xorg.conf file and the appropriate settings for their hardware. There are limitations in the information provided about the system's specifications and the exact nature of the graphic issues.

Who May Find This Useful

Users experiencing similar graphic display issues on older Linux systems, particularly those using Fedora or Red Hat distributions, may find the discussion relevant.

OK, Here I go.
I am in my new institute and a system is allotted to me. But the system is not working fine (FC2), as there was some problem with the graphic display, it would hang, eg "gnome-panel has crashed" and what ever app was started it gave such an error msg or just closed itself without giving any msg. The system would just get to the login screen when one is logged on, and sometimes give a error msg "unable to start normal login. I will now try to switch to other one." (or something like this)
So the maintainence guys installed FC2 again but again the same problem. So I told them to try RH9 instead and they installed it. But I was still facing the same problem. But I got to the matter in the end - I have to use 800*600 instead of 1024*768.
My problem - Is it possible to use 1024*768 mode, since in 800*600 everything seems so large?
Any other info you need just tell me? Please do tell me how to get that info too.

You might give FC5 a shot. FC2 is a little long in the tooth now. Check the xorg.conf file in /etc/X11 to make sure everything is configured properly for your monitor and video card.

I know FC5, but the system is old (P3) and even FC2 was slow.

And there is no such file named xorg.conf in the folder. Maybe it is in a different folder. But even if I get hold of the file, how do I know my true configuration?
