Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around troubleshooting issues related to displaying a Java-based model intended to help visualize concepts about the universe. Participants explore various methods and tools to facilitate viewing the model across different operating systems and browsers.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Experimental/applied

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses difficulty in visualizing 3D models from mathematical descriptions and seeks assistance in accessing a Java-based model.
  • Another participant suggests checking browser settings for enabling Java, noting that modern browsers favor JavaScript over Java applets.
  • A different participant recommends using the appletviewer tool as an alternative method to display the Java applet.
  • There is a follow-up inquiry about the success of using the appletviewer or the appropriate browser extensions to resolve the display issues.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the best method to display the Java-based model, as multiple approaches are suggested and no definitive solution is confirmed.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include potential dependencies on specific browser versions, operating systems, and Java settings that may affect the ability to view the model.

Hello everyone, is there an easier way to see the java-based model on my pc I have tried 2 different computers with 2 different windows versions (7 and 10) on them and 3 different browsers to try to look at the model ( Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Exploder) all with java installed on the pc's. Hear are some links to find it www.phinds.com/balloonanalogy or http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~wright/Balloon2.html
I have a hard time trying to see 3d models in my head just from the math or a description in words and would very much welcome an ad to understand the way and the shape of how the universe came to be.

Have your tried this?

Nowadays browser vendors discourage the use of applets in browsers in favor of javascript enabled ones. Processing with the p5js javascript module can allow you to develop such apps (but not convert java applets over to javascript).

I will give it a try. If I keep running into the same problem I'll let you know, thank you.

Any luck with displaying the demo via appletviewer or the correct browser extensions?
