Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of "sum rules," exploring their meaning and application across various fields such as electromagnetism (EM), acoustics, and elementary particle physics. Participants seek clarification on the contexts in which sum rules are applicable and what they entail.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about the term "sum rules" and requests clarification on their meaning and application.
  • Another participant suggests that the principle of superposition may be related to the concept of sum rules.
  • A different participant notes that sum rules apply to situations involving summation, but emphasizes the need for specificity regarding the field of application.
  • One participant mentions the Poisson summation formula as a potential example related to sum rules.
  • Another participant highlights that sum rules are common in elementary particle physics and provides a link for further examples.
  • A later reply indicates familiarity with the concept, suggesting it relates to combining probabilities, although the participant had not encountered the term "sum rules" previously.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion reflects a lack of consensus on the precise meaning and application of sum rules, with multiple viewpoints and examples presented without resolution.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not specified particular definitions or contexts for sum rules, leading to ambiguity in their discussion. The references to different fields suggest that the applicability of sum rules may vary significantly based on context.

TL;DR
sum rules
I have encountered the name "sum rules" in many places, such as EM, acoustics,... But I understand none. In what kind of situation will a sum rule occurs? What does it said exactly?

Do you mean the principle of superposition?

Which in particular? I've seen many places, but I don't necessarily know what you are talking about

"Sum rules" apply to situations where things are summed, added, or accumulated. The applicable rules will depend on the field and the particular application. You need to specify in which field you have encountered the sum rules, and what was being summed.

Sum rules are common in elementary particle physics. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sum_rules_(quantum_field_theory) for over a dozen examples.

I hadn't come across this by name but it certainly makes sense and I got the 'right answers' for the example questions in this link.
It's along the same lines as combining probabilities which we did deal with a School.
