SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the inability to change the potential difference in household currents, specifically addressing the role of fuses and transformers. It is established that while household appliances can operate at different voltages, such as a laptop at 19.5V from a 120V outlet, the potential difference in the household circuit itself remains constant. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding how transformers adjust voltage levels for appliances without altering the household current directly.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of household electrical systems
  • Knowledge of voltage and current concepts
  • Familiarity with transformers and their functions
  • Basic principles of electrical safety, including fuse operation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the function and types of transformers used in household circuits
  • Study the role of fuses in electrical safety and circuit protection
  • Explore the principles of alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) in household applications
  • Learn about voltage regulation techniques in electrical systems
USEFUL FOR

Electrical engineering students, homeowners interested in electrical safety, and anyone seeking to understand the principles of household electrical systems.

Homework Statement

Why can't the potential difference in household currents be changed?

Homework Equations

Conceptual.

The Attempt at a Solution

Is it just because the fuse will ignite if overheated?

Voltages are changed on household appliances all the time through transformers. For example my laptop runs at 19.5V and the outlet outputs at 120V.

Oh ok thanks
