How was the charge of up/down quarks determined?
The discussion centers on the determination of the charge of up and down quarks, exploring both historical context and experimental methodologies. Participants examine various approaches, including deep inelastic scattering and theoretical models, while addressing the implications of experimental data in understanding quark content.
Participants express differing views on the role of theoretical analysis in experimental methods and the implications of deducing quark content from experimental data. The discussion remains unresolved with multiple competing perspectives on the methodologies and interpretations involved.
Participants highlight the complexity of extracting quark charges and the dependence on theoretical models, indicating that some aspects of the analysis may not yet be fully developed or implemented.
Do you mean historically at first ?nuby said:How was the charge of up/down quarks determined?
DIS does require a lot of analysis to extract all the distributions together from global fits of all available observables.pam said:You don't think a lot of theoretical analysis goes into DIS, which only looks at sums of parton charges squared anyway?
