SUMMARY

After 18 years, 99.9% DMSO has completely decayed, losing its ability to crystallize and provide pain relief. A cracked cap may have contributed to oxidation, although no volume loss was observed. The user experienced significant itching and struggled to find an effective dilution ratio. Despite the decay, the shelf life of DMSO is noted as relatively good, prompting inquiries about the potency of older DMSO among other users.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) properties and applications
  • Knowledge of chemical stability and decay processes
  • Familiarity with dilution techniques for topical solutions
  • Awareness of self-medication regulations and safety
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the chemical stability of DMSO over extended periods
  • Investigate proper storage methods to prolong DMSO potency
  • Learn about effective dilution ratios for DMSO to minimize side effects
  • Explore user experiences with older DMSO products and their effectiveness
USEFUL FOR

Individuals interested in the longevity and effectiveness of DMSO, including researchers, chemists, and those considering its use for pain relief.

I saw the thread called Decay/Reactivity of DMSO and it was closed. Since the thread was inconclusive I have decided to share my results. After approximately 18 years my 99.9% DMSO has completely decayed.

When this happens it will no longer crystallize in the refrigerator. It will lose all effectiveness for pain relief.

One observation was that my cap had a crack causing some exposure to air, which could have led to oxidation and accelerated decay, yet there was no noticeable volume loss.

I didn't use it much because it makes me itch like crazy and I never found the proper ratio of dilution to minimize itching and achieve pain relief. Not to mention I never seem to throw anything away.

Not a bad shelf life, whatever happened. Anyone else have older DMSO that retained potency?
