Website For Universe map, and Matter Totals

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the search for resources that provide visual representations of the universe, specifically maps that show the hemispheres and websites that detail the total matter in the universe and its variations across different regions.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the existence of simple maps of the universe that depict the hemispheres.
  • Another participant suggests using Google Image search for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to find visual representations of galaxy distributions in the celestial hemispheres.
  • A third participant recommends a specific application, the Digital Universe software from the Hayden Planetarium, noting its capabilities to visualize data from various astronomical surveys.
  • The recommended software is described as powerful but potentially user-unfriendly, with a suggestion to run a specific batch file for extragalactic data.
  • Details about the software's data sources, including Abell, 2MASS, Sloan, and WMAP, are provided, along with a reference to the user manual for further information.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants appear to agree on the availability of resources for visualizing the universe, but there is no consensus on the best options or the completeness of the information provided.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not address the limitations of the suggested resources or the assumptions underlying the data presented in the maps and software.

Just for some observation, is there any good "maps" of the universe? like nothing detailed but shows the hemispheres.

Also is there any website which show totals of matter in the universe, and how it changes when you go to different parts of the universe?

You may find this application useful:

As it says on the tin, it's a free planetarium software released by Hayden Planetarium. It's a powerful visualisation tool, if with a bit user-unfriendly interface.

You'll want to run the "extragalactic" batch file.

It can show data from a number of surveys and calalogues, including Abell, 2MASS, Sloan, WMAP and others. You'll find the complete list in the user manual under Extragalactic Atlass->Data Groups section, together with brief description of what they are, as well as reference links.
