PHOENIX (KPHO/Gray News) — A Waymo self-driving car was seen driving down Phoenix light rail tracks this week, forcing a passenger to flee the vehicle before it continued along the tracks near an oncoming train.

Video taken by a bystander Wednesday shows the moment the self-driving car stops on the tracks just before an oncoming light rail approaches. The passenger runs out of the vehicle before the car continues to drive down the tracks near another train.

“I actually felt a little sorry for the car. It obviously made a bad decision and got itself in a difficult place,” said Andrew Maynard, an emerging and transformative technology professor at Arizona State University.

“This is exactly one of those edge cases, what we call them. Something unexpected where the machine drove like a machine rather than a person,” Maynard said.

Waymo vehicles are equipped with 29 cameras and have their routes and systems updated weekly. However, in the area where the incident happened, there was construction. The light rail was added to this spot within the last year, which Maynard said could have contributed to the rail track detour.

“I think Waymo has a challenge because no matter what they do with their system, there are always going to be unexpected circumstances where they have to learn from them,” Maynard said.

“These cars, in many circumstances, are safer than human drivers because they don’t have distractions, like a human driver does,” Maynard said.

A Valley Metro spokesperson said an employee who noticed the Waymo vehicle immediately notified the operations control center.

“Light rail operations staff responded to the scene, and Waymo was contacted. To minimize service impacts, northbound and southbound trains exchanged passengers before reversing direction to continue service,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Is that kind of like saying, "We are continuing to experiment with dangerous machines on public streets" ?

Yes.

Plus you can't program human fallibility and irrationality in advance. Driving with humans is a very human experience. Merging onto a busy freeway when you aren't guaranteed a space? We do that all the time; I know you'll let me in, you'll have to. How do you program that months in advance for thousands of cars? Maybe we don't have to cooperate with the Waymo, we know they'll make the safer choice. Otherwise they will have to program the awful driving that we see with a fraction of other humans.

We have lots of Waymos in my city and I'm really happy that they seem to have programmed them to drive above the very low speed limits, just like ALL of the humans around them; premeditatedly breaking the law. There are many interesting conundrums lurking.

Malcom Gladwell covered this pretty well. Here's a snippet, but his podcast is more interesting and in-depth. The numbers are too small yet to show the many difficult issues pending with integration into the existing paradigm.

Nationally significant Anglo-Saxon burial ground found at Sizewell C site

https://www.sizewellc.com/news-view...saxon-burial-ground-found-at-sizewell-c-site/

Ancient graves of two high-status individuals found with weapons and personal items
Archaeologists have uncovered a nationally significant Anglo-Saxon burial ground during excavations for the Sizewell C nuclear power station in Suffolk.

Among the most remarkable discoveries is a high-status grave containing two individuals buried alongside a fully harnessed horse, weapons, and personal items. These finds, dating to the 7th century, suggest the individuals were elite members of Anglo-Saxon society and reflect their complex burial traditions.

The team from Oxford Cotswold Archaeology (OCA), working on behalf of Sizewell C, identified at least 11 burial mounds, known as barrows, along with cremation and inhumation burials. All had been carefully arranged across a prominent point in the landscape near Theberton in Suffolk.

Despite poor bone preservation caused by the local sandy soils, detailed excavation and recording have preserved valuable information about burial practices and social status in early Medieval Suffolk.

A Ukrainian refugee is in Japan dominating the sport of sumo. If it weren't for the war he'd be a student in college.

This is why I prefer fact over fiction. Real life is not constrained by plausibility.
