What are the benefits of self-publishing a science fiction novel?

I am new to the forum and it was suggested that I introduce myself. So, here goes: I have math up to linear algebra in College. I am pretty rusty in my math, but I am interested in it still. I used to work at Cat Tractor but the big boys there trashed a bunch of their IT people at the end of the year. So, I am currently unemployed. I am currently in the process of getting a finished book cover for a scifi book that I am self-publishing. I am also working on a second novel in my abundant free time.
