What are the recent advances in electrical engineering?

Electrical engineering is an extremely large field. There probably aren't that many new huge breakthroughs, but there have been plenty of improvements in current technology. To name a few:
1. Faster data transfer in wireless communications and wired communications (fiber, etc.).
2. Smaller and smaller transistors every year --> more computing power.

If you want to get really general, I'd say smartphones are new in the field of electrical engineering. In addition, work is being done now (I believe) on modernizing our nation's power infrastructure.
