SUMMARY

The molecular term symbols for nitrogen dioxide (NO2), chlorine dioxide (ClO2), and oxygen (O2) represent their respective ground electronic states. NO2 has a ground state of 2A1, indicating a doublet state with A symmetry. ClO2 is in a 2B1 state, also a doublet but with B symmetry. O2 is in a 3Σ-g state, indicating a triplet state with a sigma symmetry and a negative parity.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of molecular term symbols
  • Familiarity with electronic states and symmetry labels
  • Basic knowledge of molecular orbital theory
  • Awareness of spectroscopic notation
NEXT STEPS
  • Research molecular term symbols in detail using "Molecular Spectroscopy" textbooks
  • Study the implications of symmetry in molecular electronic states
  • Explore the role of spin multiplicity in molecular behavior
  • Examine the electronic structure of diatomic and polyatomic molecules
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, molecular physicists, and researchers in spectroscopy who seek to understand molecular electronic states and their representations.

I'm trying to decipher exactly what it means to say the following things:

(1) The ground electronic state of NO[itex]_2[/itex] is [itex]^{2}A_1[/itex];

(2) The ground electronic state of ClO[itex]_2[/itex] is [itex]^{2}B_1[/itex];

(3) The ground electronic state of O[itex]_2[/itex] is [itex]^{3}\Sigma^{-}_g[/itex].

I really don't have a clue what these symbols are supposed to mean. Can someone please help?
