I think you and @DaveE have some things in common.

My laser prof in university used to say, "When it's time to turn on the high-power laser, I ask one of my graduate students to throw the big switch." :wink:

Spoken like a true professor. I wouldn't have let him do anything in my lab. He can watch, from over there by the door...
BTW, big lasers don't explode*; well, hardly ever. I have just a couple of stories, but they were all from stupidity in an R&D setting.

* at least ours didn't.
