What Does the Order Parameter in BCS Theory Represent?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The order parameter in BCS Theory represents the pair wavefunction of superconducting electrons, evolving from its origins in the Ginsburg-Landau equation. This concept is foundational in understanding superconductivity, as it describes the macroscopic quantum state of the superconducting fluid. Key literature, such as Tinkham's classic text, provides insights into the Ginsburg-Landau theory and its implications for the order parameter.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Ginsburg-Landau theory
  • Familiarity with BCS Theory
  • Knowledge of superconductivity concepts
  • Basic grasp of quantum mechanics
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the Ginsburg-Landau equation in detail
  • Read Tinkham's "Introduction to Superconductivity"
  • Explore the implications of the order parameter in superconductivity
  • Investigate other models of superconductivity beyond BCS Theory
USEFUL FOR

Physicists, materials scientists, and students studying superconductivity and quantum mechanics will benefit from this discussion.

Hi guys,

What exactly is an order parameter? What does the order parameter in BCS Theory represent? I can't find anything on this anywhere.

Thanks in advance

The order parameter in superconductivity came from the Ginsburg-Landau equation. It started out as being the phenomenological "wavefunction" for the superconducting fluid. So it precedes the BCS theory. In BCS theory, it evolves into the pair wavefunction.

Textbooks such as Tinkham's classic text has a brief intro to GL theory and the order parameter.
