SUMMARY

A black hole evaporates through a process known as Hawking radiation, where it gradually loses mass over time until it completely disappears. This phenomenon is a consequence of quantum mechanics and general relativity, as described by Stephen Hawking. The evaporation process results in the release of energy, ultimately leading to the black hole's demise.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of quantum mechanics
  • Familiarity with general relativity
  • Knowledge of black hole physics
  • Basic concepts of thermodynamics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research Hawking radiation and its implications on black hole thermodynamics
  • Explore the mathematics behind black hole evaporation
  • Study the relationship between entropy and black holes
  • Investigate current theories on black hole information paradox
USEFUL FOR

Astronomers, physicists, students of theoretical physics, and anyone interested in advanced astrophysics concepts.

I seriously never understood this. What does it mean for a black hole to evaporate?

Exactly that - it loses rest-mass until it is gone.
