What is Experimental Design and How is it Used in Identifying Pure Substances?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the concept of experimental design in the context of identifying pure substances through their properties. Participants are seeking clarity on what constitutes experimental design and how it is applied in laboratory settings.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks for a definition of experimental design in relation to their lab report.
  • Another participant suggests that experimental design involves the apparatus used and its setup.
  • There is a query about whether a diagram and an explanation of the experiment's execution are necessary components of the report.
  • A participant provides a broader definition, stating that experimental design encompasses the selection of equipment, arrangement, and processes to gather information.
  • One participant contemplates whether writing about the experiment's execution would be considered part of the procedure.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants appear to have varying interpretations of what constitutes experimental design, with no consensus reached on a singular definition or approach.

Contextual Notes

Some definitions provided may depend on specific educational contexts or interpretations, and participants have not settled on a unified understanding of the term.

I am doing a Lab report on "Using Properties To Identify Pure Substances"
I want to know what does the Experimental design mean. Can anyone tell
me what it means?

Thanks,

Thanks,

It would be the apparatus used and how it's set up.

you mean like I have to draw a diagram and explain how the experiment was done?

thanks

Yes I think so.Enjoy it.

How a person chooses equipment and arrange it and to initiate and perform processes for the purpose of obtaining information. Someone may have a more efficient definition of Experimental Design.

Don't let the sophisticated terminology distract you. It is how you choose to achieve your objective of making measurements and observations to help you study and understand a small piece of nature or a process.

Ok so I am going to make a picture of our experiment and explain what's in the
picture. Or should I say like how I did it. I was thinking If I write how I did the
experiment then that will become the procedure.
