Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the function labeled 'Advice' on a payment device used in a pub setting. Participants explore the purpose and meaning of this function after one user encountered it during a transaction. The scope includes user experience with payment devices and potential interpretations of the function's name.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant describes their experience with the payment device and expresses confusion about the 'Advice' function, noting that it only provides a field for entering a dollar amount.
  • Another participant suggests that in the UK, an "advice" slip from an ATM provides transaction details, proposing that the function might serve a similar purpose, such as checking the balance on a prepaid card.
  • A separate comment humorously speculates about a connection to a "Red Light district," implying a more playful interpretation of the term 'Advice.'
  • A link to a website is shared, which may contain information related to credit advice and voice authorization, but no specific context is provided in the discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the meaning of the 'Advice' function, with multiple interpretations and no clear resolution to the question posed.

Contextual Notes

There is uncertainty regarding the specific purpose of the 'Advice' function, and assumptions about its meaning vary among participants. The discussion does not clarify the function's intended use or context within the payment device.

Not the device - the function.

This is in a pub. I've paid for my dinner by Interac, and the waitress got distracted and left the device with me. After finishing with my transaction, this menu (pic: menu.jpg) appeared on the device.

What on Earth could Advice be?
So I pressed it, and it went to the second screen (pic: input.jpg). The title is Advice, and all that it provides is a field for entry of a dollar amount.

I asked two waitresses, and neither of them had any idea what it might be for.

Obvious throwaway answer is that they charge for advice here, but seriously... any ideas?

Well, in the UK you would get an "advice" slip from an ATM which would tell you the details of the transaction (amount withdrawn or, if from your bank, your balance and available daily funds). So maybe it's something like this - checking how much money is on a prepaid card?
