Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around estimating the average pushing force that a human can exert, with considerations of various factors that may influence this force, such as the use of machines, muscle capabilities, and friction.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks for the average pushing force a human can exert, indicating a lack of clear information found in their research.
  • Another participant questions the ambiguity of the question, suggesting that factors like the use of pulleys, muscle strength, and friction should be considered.
  • A participant proposes that the average maximum force could be around 175 kiloNewtons.
  • A subsequent reply challenges the proposed figure, noting that it equates to approximately 18 tonnes, which seems excessive.
  • A later reply corrects the previous figure to 17.5 tonnes, indicating uncertainty about the accuracy of the initial claim.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the average pushing force, with no consensus reached on a specific value or the factors that should be considered in determining it.

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights the ambiguity in defining the average pushing force, including the potential influence of external aids and the physical capabilities of individuals.

Homework Statement

Does anyone know the average pushing force a human being can exert?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I did some research online but didn't find anything.

I think the question is rather ambiguous. 1. with help of pulley or any other simple machine? 2. account for muscle (prob?) 3. friction?

I looked up "strongest man alive" and I got: Mariusz Pudzianowski

So I guess you can look at his stats and conclude on that.

I believe the average maximum force would be around 175 kiloNewtons

Are you sure about that? Thats 18 tonnes of weight. Seems a bit much.
