What stage of mitosis can chromosomes be counted and why?
Chromosomes can be accurately counted during the metaphase stage of mitosis due to their distinct arrangement and condensation. During metaphase, chromosomes are aligned at the cell's equatorial plane, making them easily visible under a microscope. In contrast, during other phases such as prophase and anaphase, chromosomes are either not fully condensed or are in the process of separation, complicating accurate counting. Karyotype analysis further supports the visibility of chromosomes during metaphase.
