Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around predictions for the next significant paradigm shift in the philosophy or theory of science. Participants explore various concepts, including the Theory of Everything, artificial life, and the implications of consciousness in scientific understanding.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants propose that the next paradigm could involve the creation of artificial life.
  • Others suggest that the discovery of a Theory of Everything (ToE), potentially linked to M-Theory or quantum gravity, may represent a significant shift.
  • There are claims regarding the nature of "M" in M-Theory, with some attributing it to Edward Witten and others suggesting various interpretations.
  • One participant expresses a hope for a paradigm that acknowledges consciousness and the metaphysical foundations of science, while also stating an expectation of no change.
  • The concept of "Dark Energy" and the need for a supplementary Theory of Everything Else is introduced as a potential area for future exploration.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a variety of predictions and hopes for future paradigms, with no clear consensus on what the next significant shift will be. Multiple competing views remain regarding the nature and implications of these potential paradigms.

Contextual Notes

Some discussions involve speculative ideas about the implications of scientific discoveries, such as the use of anti-matter as an energy source, which remain unresolved and depend on various assumptions.

What do you predict will be the next overarching, revolutionary saltation (paradigm) in the philosophy or theory of science?

booda sounds so cool when u say it in your head..
booda!

booda!

anti-matter, once it is used as an energy source i think this will cause major leaps in our capability to preform scientific experiments...

and u know the experiments on creating matter out of energy? i think this will change a lot... cause this sort of scientific discovery is godlike...

I must admit that my name is not a Buddhist mantra!

Creation of artificial life.

no such association was made!

I appreciate your admiration.

=] your appreciation has caused me to admire it more!

The discovery of the ToE.

More directly, the discovery that M-Theory is the ToE after all .

you mean like the toes on my feet?

Theory of Everything; perhaps M-Theory or quantum gravity.

whats the M stand for? this is a theory that explains everything?

The significance of "M" is still Moot, but some claim it is an upside-down "W" for Edward Witten, the superstring genius out of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton.

One in which consciousness exists and science faces up to the metaphysical quicksand on which it is built.

No. wait a minute, that's what I hope, not what I expect. What I expect is no change.

One in which consciousness exists and science faces up to the metaphysical muddle on which it is built.

No, wait a minute, that's what I hope. What I expect is no change.

Or both .

Witten himself said that the word either stands for "Matrix", "Mother", or "Membrane", depending on preference, IIRC.

The nature of "Dark Energy", and the realisation that our present ideas about a Theory of Everything must be supplemented by a Theory of Everything Else.

I like that. 'A Theory of Everything Else'. Lol.
