Adding a few more to the list of great Rock & Roll songs:

Cream - Crossroads
Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs
Traffic - Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, Many a Mile to Freedom, Rainmaker, Dear Mr. Fantasy
Blind Faith - Can't Find My Way Home
Quicksilver Messenger Sevice - What About Me, Fresh Air, Gold and Silver
Yes - Parallels - great tune while sprinting down a soccer field
Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Karn Evil 9: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Impressions
Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water, Woman from Tokyo, Highway Star, Space Truckin'
Doors - Light My Fire, Riders on the Storm
Greatful Dead - Clementine Jam, The Eleven Jam
Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter, Monkey Man
Santana - Singing Winds, Crying Beasts; Black Magic Woman,
Jon Butcher - Holy War
Jefferson Airplane - Somebody to Love
Blue Öyster Cult - Cities On Flame (with Rock & Roll) in addition to Last Days of May (live version)

I could certainly add more

The best song depends on the mood and situation. Ripping down the highway is a different experience than sitting watching a sunset or laying back in a dark room.

And Rock & Roll will never die

I've never understood why people like this song. It's not because of Wayne's World is it?

huh? Are you suggesting that only people on drugs like the song? Don't make accusations to account for your lack of good taste. :-p

Maybe we're not talking about the same song. The one I'm thinking of is very very slow for about 4 minutes, then it goes to that weird part that was used in Wayne's World, then it sounds like a normal rock song for maybe 1 minute, then it goes back to being incredibly slow.

Traffic -

"40,000 headmen"

"Rainmaker"

"Sad and deep as you"

That's the one. Yes, we really liked it.

Words and music by freddie mercury

Is this the real life-
Is this just fantasy-
Caught in a landslide-
No escape from reality-
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see-
I’m just a poor boy,i need no sympathy-
Because I’m easy come,easy go,
A little high,little low,
Anyway the wind blows, doesn’t really matter to me,
To me

Mama,just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger,now he’s dead,
Mama,life had just begun,
But now I’ve gone and thrown it all away-
Mama ooo,
Didn’t mean to make you cry-
If I’m not back again this time tomorrow-
Carry on,carry on,as if nothing really matters-

Too late,my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine-
Body’s aching all the time,
Goodbye everybody-I’ve got to go-
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth-
Mama ooo- (any way the wind blows)
I don’t want to die,
I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all-

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouche, scaramouche will you do the fandango-
Thunderbolt and lightning-very very frightening me-
Galileo,galileo,
Galileo galileo
Galileo figaro-magnifico-
But I’m just a poor boy and nobody loves me-
He’s just a poor boy from a poor family-
Spare him his life from this monstrosity-
Easy come easy go-,will you let me go-
Bismillah! no-,we will not let you go-let him go-
Bismillah! we will not let you go-let him go
Bismillah! we will not let you go-let me go
Will not let you go-let me go
Will not let you go let me go
No,no,no,no,no,no,no-
Mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go-
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me,for me,for me-

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye-
So you think you can love me and leave me to die-
Oh baby-can’t do this to me baby-
Just got to get out-just got to get right outta here-

Nothing really matters,
Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters-,nothing really matters to me,

Any way the wind blows...

Fibonacci

I have always wanted to quote myself, so i did.

I am a big classic/Metal rock fan, so i say right up there on my list are:

purple haze-hendrix
stairway to heaven-led zeppelin
You shook me all night long-ACDC
American Pie-McLean
Spirit in the sky- Norman Greenbaum
Born to be wild-Steppenwolf
We're not going to take it- Twisted sister
Beautiful Day-U2
Vertigo-U2
Time of your life(good riddance)-green day

However, my favorite is ...

Stairway to heaven; the transition from soft rock type music to heavy metal is just great and so is the ending. Its a great example of the music of the time and is still a great song.

It would be easier to say which Elton John and Beatles songs don't belong here than the ones that do, so let's just take 'em all.
Paranoid
Stumblin' In by Suzie Q. and Chris Norman
Death Walks Behind You by Atomic Rooster
When the Lights are Out & Run Away by Slade
I mentioned them somewhere, but not in this thread: Armaggedon & Spaceship Superstar by Prism; Don't Fear the Reaper by BOC
Black Velvet by Alana Miles
Get Back to Your Woods by Robbie Robertson
Real Enough, Too Bad, and Making it Work by Doug and the Slugs
It's a Heartache by Bonnie Tyler

It's impossible for me to choose one song. I always get a kick out of the sign in the music store in the guitar section that reads: "No Stairway To Heaven" and of course there's always someone who yells at the band to play "Freebird." I understand it is the most difficult lead guitar to play. As for Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer said he can only play a certain number of songs because he gets so tired.

Ten Years After - I'm going home, I'd Love to Change the World.
Black Sabbath - The Wizard, and most anything else from their catalog.
Judas Priest - ditto, especially Free Wheel Burning!
Bill Withers - Lean on Me, Use Me Up.
James Taylor - catalog
Chicago - I'm a Man, almost anything before they "jumped the shark"

I wouldn't say any of these are 'the best song ever' but I do like to listen to them once in a while

Bruce Springsteen - Murder Incorporated
George Thorogood - Get a haircut
Meat Loaf - Life is a lemon, everything louder than everything else
John Lennon - God, Watching the wheels, Imagine
Trooper - Raise a little hell
Twisted Sister - Heroes are hard to find
Led Zeppelin - Dream on, Pour some sugar on me
Jerry Lee lewis - Great Balls of fire
Dire Straits - Industrial Disease
Chuck Berry - Johnny B Good

Fade to Black- Metallica

Needs no explanation.

For non-artistic reasons, 'We Are the World' should probably be in there somewhere.

  • #55

  • #56
Nights in White Satin - Moody Blues
One Tin Soldier - Coven
Tangled Up in Blue - Bob Dylan
Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me - Elton John

Okay, what's this 'Coven' ****? One Tin Soldier was written and originally performed for the Billy Jack soundtrack by Dixie Lee Stone and the Original Caste. Dixie Lee was one of the kid performers on a kid show in Calgary called Safety Roundup when I was even more of a kid. The band didn't last too long, but this was their serious biggie.
