SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the evaluation of FEA software options for basic static analysis and thermal conduction, specifically in the context of using PTC Creo 2.0. Users are considering whether to invest in the Creo Simulate extension or explore alternative solutions. Recommendations include WELSIM, an open-source tool that supports STEP file imports for static FEA analysis, as a viable low-cost option. The conversation highlights a preference for staying within the PTC ecosystem or opting for smaller software companies.

PREREQUISITES
  • Familiarity with PTC Creo 2.0 CAD software
  • Understanding of basic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) concepts
  • Knowledge of thermal conduction principles
  • Experience with STEP file format for CAD data export
NEXT STEPS
  • Evaluate the capabilities of Creo Simulate for static FEA and thermal analysis
  • Research WELSIM features and installation process for FEA applications
  • Compare pricing and functionalities of alternative FEA software from smaller companies
  • Investigate community support and documentation for open-source FEA tools
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, CAD designers, and analysts seeking to implement basic FEA and thermal conduction analysis within their existing PTC Creo workflow or looking for cost-effective software alternatives.

We currently are running PTC Creo 2.0 for our CAD software and are looking into bringing some basic FEA capabilities in house. Should we just bite the bullet and get Creo Simulate extension? Or so I bother to spend the time looking into other packages? I have used Algor in the past, but they are owned by Autodesk now, would rather stay with PTC or go with a smaller company.

We need to be able to do some basic static FEA and maybe thermal conduction. Has anyone had luck with open source or low-cost programs?

If your CAD data can be exported into the STEP file format, then try WELSIM, which can directly import your CAD data and run your static FEA analysis.
